Harambee Stars coach reveals why Jadon Sancho refused to apologise to ex-Man United boss Erik ten Hag
- Jadon Sancho is going through the most difficult period of his career after a forgettable loan spell at Chelsea
- The England winger fell out with Erik ten Hag in September 2023 and refused to apologise
- Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has explained why the former Borussia Dortmund star couldn't say sorry
Jadon Sancho's loan move from Manchester United to Chelsea has not gone to plan. Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy recently explained why he refused to apologise to Erik ten Hag after their relationship fell apart.
Why Sancho refused to apologise to Erik ten Hag
Jadon Sancho joined Man United in 2021 for a £73 million (KSh 12.5 billion) deal from German club Borussia Dortmund, but failed to perform at Old Trafford.
He was banished by Erik ten Hag in September 2023 by Erik ten Hag, the former Man United boss, due to his performances in training.
The England star put out a message to respond to the Dutchman, and the two fell out immediately. He was sent on loan back to Dortmund in January before returning to the club in July after helping the Bundesliga club reach the Champions League final.
Sancho refused to apologise to Ten Hag, and Benni McCarthy explained why last year.
"If you are from the streets, no one wants to apologise because then you’re admitting you are not training well, you are lazy, everything you are accused of," he told 947 via MEN.
"I spoke to Jadon as a coach, as a mentor, as a friend and as someone who grew up on the streets and knows the code. But Jadon just wasn’t seeing it. He said, 'I ain’t apologising because if I do, I’m apologising for being lazy, always being late and not giving my best. That’s what I’m apologising for'. And those were his reasons."
Sancho was quickly moved to Chelsea on loan last summer and could soon play for the Red Devils again if the London club refuses to sign him permanently.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea have an obligation to buy him for £25 million if they finish 15th and above. If they can't, they will have to pay a penalty.
What went wrong with Sancho?
The 25-year-old was seen as one of the most exciting forwards in the world when he was at Dortmund. His numbers were impressive alongside Erling Haaland.
Since joining Man United, things have never been the same. He has 83 appearances for the Red Devils, registering six goals and 12 assists. He has four goals and 10 assists for Chelsea in 39 appearances.
He has played under several managers so far, which has disrupted his development. Nevertheless, he has struggled to adapt to English football.
Will MacCarthy quit Harambee Stars?
Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Benni McCarthy was linked with a move to South African club Orlando Pirates after the exit of Jose Riveiro.
Harambee Stars assistant coach Moeneeb Josephs addressed rumours linking McCarthy to a return to South Africa.
The goalkeeping coach dismissed the reports, but admitted it would be a great move.
